Welcome Happiness

Sometimes I see them when I open the kitchen curtains, first thing in the morning.

Other times, I see them zip by overhead on evening walks.

Once, one flew right into the doorway of our open garage when I was folding laundry, and it just hovered there, as if looking in on me.

Every day since my curandero course at the University of New Mexico, I have been visited by, or have seen a living colibrí, or hummingbird.

I’ve seen them in flight, feeding on nectar; I’ve seen them alone or in pairs.

Amongst the bird species, they are extraordinary in their flying ability. They are highly evolved and, like bees, are responsible for pollinating plants, flowers, and trees.

From a spiritual perspective, hummingbirds are said to be the messengers of the universe, and embodiments of our ancestors.

When they are near, it is said that challenging times are over and healing can begin. They are also said to be harbingers of good luck and hope. They are associated with joy and lightness and positive energy.

The Hopi and Zuni people of my home state of New Mexico see the hummingbird as a symbol of the fertility of the land.

The Pueblo people believe the hummingbird is responsible for bringing smoke to the shamans on Earth for purification rituals.

The Aztec associated hummingbirds with Huitzilopochtli, the god of the sun. The god often appears with features of a man and a hummingbird, and his name can be translated as hummingbird wizard.

For me, the gift of seeing a hummingbird every day for the past several months has been exactly that: a gift. The gods, the universe, my ancestors, the spirit, is sending me a clear reminder every single day to feel joy, to welcome happiness into my life, and to live to the fullest.

Each bird is a symbol that I am enough, that I am loved, and that I am doing a good job. They are reminding me to focus on the positive and to be light, easy, and free.

I thank you, my daily colibrí,
For visiting me

You are showing me the way,
Reminding me every day

That life is for living
Deeply, fully, and with love
